Element 55 Designs focuses on the use of wood and steel, and the contrast created when they are used together. We showcase the inherent properties of the materials through the simplicity of form and finish. Devoid of ornamentation and coupled with simple steel supports, the character of each wood slab comes to the fore. From start to finish the process of each of our designs is quite interesting.
Although much of our recent work is based on a common design, every piece is unique due to the diversity of wood species, form, texture and grain in the slabs that we use. The slabs are coated with a non-toxic, durable tung oil finish to accentuate the color and grain, and to protect them from drying out. Our materials come from a variety of local sources, ranging 100 year old barn finds to trees cut down because of disease.
